Working with AlphaSense Inside Excel
Open the AlphaSense pane in Excel to begin. From there, select the cells or model section you want to work with, or describe where the change should be made.
Enter your request in plain language, review the result in your workbook, and provide additional instructions when adjustments are needed.
The following workflows show how you can use AlphaSense for Excel throughout the modeling process.
Build or Extend a Model
Use AlphaSense for Excel to add a new section to a workbook or extend a model you have already started. AlphaSense for Excel can also help you think through how to approach a model section before building it.
To build or extend a model:
- Open the workbook you want to update.
- Open the AlphaSense pane in Excel.
- Select the area where the new section should be added, or describe its intended location.
- Describe what you want AlphaSense to build.
- Review the formulas, assumptions, references, and formatting added to the workbook.
- Enter a follow-up instruction if you want to revise the structure or output.
For example:
- “Add a quarterly revenue build with base, upside, and downside scenarios.”
- “Add an LBO debt schedule below the operating model.”
- “What is a reasonable way to structure sensitivities for this deal?”
Note: You can then refine the suggested approach before asking AlphaSense to add it to the workbook.
Edit an Existing Model
When an assumption, formula, or model component changes, you can make a targeted update without recreating the surrounding section. AlphaSense for Excel is designed to work within the existing structure of your model and preserve surrounding formulas and formatting where possible.
To edit a model:
- Select the cells or section you want to update. You can also describe where the change should be made.
- Enter your instruction in the AlphaSense pane.
- Review the affected formulas, references, and dependent calculations.
- Provide another instruction if additional changes are needed.
For example:
- “Add a new line item for stock-based compensation below operating expenses.”
- “Update the revenue-growth assumption in the base case to 8%.”
Note: Always review changes before relying on the model or sharing it with others, just as you would review a manual edit.
Bring AlphaSense Data into Your Workbook
You can bring financial data and research from AlphaSense into your workbook without leaving Excel. This helps you move from research to modeling while maintaining a connection to the original source.
Depending on your access, this may include:
- Company financials
- Comparable-company data
- Filings
- Broker research
- Expert call insights
- Other content available through AlphaSense
To bring data into your workbook:
- Open the AlphaSense pane.
- Select the area where you want the data added, or describe its intended location.
- Describe the information you need.
- Review the data added to your workbook.
- Use the accompanying source information to verify the figures and understand where they came from.
For example:
- “Pull the last four quarters of revenue for [Company] from AlphaSense.”
Extract Data from Documents
When a filing, PDF, or data room document contains information you need in Excel, AlphaSense for Excel can extract the relevant figures or tables into your workbook. AlphaSense for Excel formats the extracted content for use in your workbook, but you should confirm that the table structure and figures match the source before using the data in your analysis.
To extract document data:
- Open the AlphaSense pane.
- Identify the document you want to use or describe where it can be found.
- Select the workbook location where the extracted data should be placed.
- Describe what you want to extract.
- Review the extracted values, labels, periods, and formatting against the source document.
For example:
- “Extract the income statement from this filing and place it in the Financials tab.
Automate Repetitive Modeling Tasks
AlphaSense for Excel can also complete smaller tasks that often require significant manual effort.
Use it to:
- Apply consistent formatting across a worksheet
- Extend formulas or patterns across additional periods
- Identify or fix broken cell references
- Review a model for inconsistencies
- Standardize labels, units, or number formats
- Update repeated assumptions across a workbook
To complete one of these tasks:
- Select the relevant cells, worksheet, or model section.
- Describe the change in the AlphaSense pane.
- After the task is complete, review the affected cells and confirm that the changes were applied as intended.
For example:
- “Apply the same formatting from the historical periods to the forecast periods.”
- “Check this worksheet for broken references and inconsistent formulas.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Will AlphaSense for Excel overwrite my existing model?

- Data brought in from AlphaSense includes source information that allows you to trace it back to the original document or dataset. Review the source before relying on the figure in your analysis.

- No. Workbook files are processed locally. AlphaSense does not store or inspect your workbook contents as part of this process.
Do I still need to review changes made by AlphaSense for Excel?
- Yes. Review all formulas, assumptions, references, extracted data, and formatting before relying on the model or sharing it with others.
Can AlphaSense for Excel help me decide how to structure a model?
