What are FERC Filings?
FERC Filings are annual and quarterly reports from Energy & Utility companies filed with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission is the United States federal agency that regulates the transmission and wholesale sale of electricity and natural gas as well as transportation of oil by pipeline in interstate commerce.
What do FERC Filings Contain?
Unlike SEC filings, FERC filings contain data at the subsidiary level around revenue, pipeline approvals, import and export data, list of assets and associated value, detailed breakdown of operational expenses, storage details, etc.
Types of FERC Filings
Electric Utilities - Annual Reports (Form F1,1-F)
- An annual regulatory requirement for major (1) and non-major (1F) electric utilities, licensees and others.
Electric, Gas, Hydropower - Quarterly Reports (Form 3-Q)
- A quarterly regulatory requirement which supplements the annual financial reporting requirement of Form 1.
Natural Gas Utilities - Annual Reports (Form 2,2-A)
- A compilation of financial and operational information from major (2) and non-major (2A) interstate natural gas pipelines subject to the jurisdiction of FERC. The form contains data for a calendar year.
Oil Pipelines - Annual Reports (Form 6) & Quarterly Reports (Form 6-Q)
- An annual (6) and quarterly (6Q) regulatory reporting requirement. These reports are designed to collect both financial and operational information from oil pipeline companies subject to the jurisdiction of FERC.
Service Utilities - Annual Reports (Form 60)
- An annual regulatory support requirement for centralized service companies.
NOTE: AlphaSense does not contain all of the FERC filings including: 501G, 549B, 548D, 552, 556, 561, 566, 580, 730, and 920.
Why are FERC Filings Beneficial?
FERC (Federal Energy Regulatory Commission) filings provide detailed insight into the operations and financial health of energy companies, utilities, and pipeline operators. They help investors and analysts evaluate infrastructure projects, rate cases, and regulatory compliance, all critical drivers of company performance.
Because these filings capture trends in energy demand, pricing, and capacity, they also serve as indicators of broader market and policy shifts. For Investor Relations and corporate strategy teams, FERC data offers a benchmark to compare against peers and prepare for regulatory or market-driven questions from the Street.
