The Microsoft 365 integration allows you to securely connect your organization's Teams messages and Outlook mail to AlphaSense, enabling you to search, analyze, and reference internal content alongside external sources. This integration is designed with access control in mind, requiring a one-time setup by a Microsoft 365 tenant administrator, followed by individual user authentication.
Once connected, administrators can manage which users and groups have access, and individual users authenticate against their own credentials so that only content they are permissioned to view is surfaced in AlphaSense.
Before You Begin
- You must have an active Microsoft 365 account.
- A Microsoft 365 tenant administrator (Global Administrator or Privileged Role Administrator) must complete the initial installation.
- Users will only see and connect to Teams chats, channels, and Outlook mailboxes they have permission to access in Microsoft 365.
Step 1: Installation (Tenant Admin Only)
The tenant administrator must initiate the integration by starting the authentication flow within AlphaSense.
During setup:
- The administrator reviews and approves the permissions AlphaSense requests across Microsoft Graph (Teams messages, Outlook mail, calendars, user profile, etc.).
- Granting admin consent registers AlphaSense as an enterprise application within the tenant.
- The scope of admin consent determines what content can be accessed by users in AlphaSense.
After successfully completing admin consent, AlphaSense will appear in the Microsoft Entra admin center under: Enterprise applications → AlphaSense
Important: If the tenant administrator has not completed the installation, other users (including standard members) will not be able to connect Microsoft 365 from AlphaSense.
Users attempting to connect before installation will see an error screen prompting them to contact their administrator.
Step 2: Individual User Connection
Once the tenant administrator has completed the installation:
- Individual users can initiate their own authentication flow from AlphaSense.
- Users can connect their Microsoft 365 account, covering both Teams and Outlook.
- Access is limited to mailboxes, chats, channels, and files they have permission to view in Microsoft 365.
This step ensures each user securely connects their account while maintaining proper access controls.
Step 3: Modify Tenant Access
Administrators can update which users or groups can use AlphaSense at any time.
To modify access:
- Go to Microsoft Entra admin center → Enterprise applications.
- Locate the AlphaSense application.
- Open Users and groups to add or remove users and groups as needed.
- Optionally, scope Teams or Outlook permissions further via application access policies in the Microsoft 365 admin center.
Individual users can also disconnect their own account from AlphaSense at any time, which immediately revokes AlphaSense's access to their Teams and Outlook data.
Changes will update what content is available within AlphaSense.
How It Works
- Teams and Outlook content is securely connected and permissioned based on user access.
- Only content the user has permission to view in Microsoft 365 is made available in AlphaSense.
- Each user's connection respects their individual Microsoft 365 permissions and any conditional access policies the organization enforces.
This ensures that sensitive information remains controlled while still enabling powerful cross-source research.
Troubleshooting
I can't connect Microsoft 365 in AlphaSense.
- Confirm that your tenant administrator has completed the initial installation and granted admin consent.
- If not, contact your Microsoft 365 administrator.
I don't see the Teams or Outlook content I expect.
- Verify you have access to those teams, channels, or mailboxes in Microsoft 365.
- Ask your administrator to confirm the AlphaSense enterprise application is assigned to you (if user assignment is required).
- For Teams, confirm that application access policies aren't restricting message access.
I need to update access.
- Administrators should follow the steps in Modify Tenant Access to adjust user and group assignments in Microsoft Entra.
